Therapeutic Apheresis

Therapeutic Apheresis Vithas organises a conference on therapeutic apheresis in Benalmadena

The Department of Nephrology at Vithas Xanit Internacional Hospital, who belongs to the Vithas Healthcare Group, has organised for 2nd of February a workshop on therapeutic apheresis in order to deepen the existing knowledge of this treatment, as well as the different modalities available in the hospital and the variety of pathologies that may benefit from this treatment. "The therapeutic apheresis is a procedure applicable to many diseases, many of them being autoimmune and those which occasionally are refractory to conventional medical treatments, however thanks to this technique those pathologies are getting improved and even resolved, explains Dr Franquelo, Head of the Department of Nephrology at Vithas Xanit and coordinator of the workshop, adding that "For example, the condition of familial hypercholesterolemia can be treated successfully using this technique, allowing reduction of up to 70% of LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) in patients suffering from this disease, a genetic disorder with high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality".

The workshop will also concentrate on the activity of the Therapeutic Apheresis Unit of Vithas Xanit, which has been going on for 2 years and which has conducted more than 200 treatments for various diseases, particularly on patients referred from other hospitals, even other provinces.

"At Vithas Xanit we have an Apheresis Unit that offers, among others, a type of therapeutic apheresis called the double filtration, which is a technique that allows us to eliminate the atherogenesis lipoproteins from the blood (total cholesterol, LDL, low-density lipoproteins -- and Lp(a) lipoprotein [a]-), maintaining the rest of the components, thereby reducing the vascular damage in pathologies such as familial hypercholesterolemia, which causes in these patients diseases such as myocardial infarction, cerebral infarction (ischemic stroke) or peripheral artery disease, among others," explains Dr Franquelo.

The event, which will see the participation of a worldwide renown specialists in the subject, including Dr Fernando Anaya, the Chairman of the Working Group of Therapeutic Apheresis of the Spanish Society of Nephrology (SEN) and Head of Section of the Hospital Gregorio Marañón, is aimed at the specialists in nephrology interested in therapeutic apheresis, qualified nurses or those interested in circulation techniques, as well as anybody interested in this emerging technique. It will also see the participation of Dr Pedro Aranda Granados, Head of Cardiovascular Surgery at Vithas Xanit, Dr  José Antonio Reyes of the Neurology Department at Vithas Xanit, Salvador Galiano a nurse, also from Vithas Xanit Hospital and Dr Franquelo.

"The event will be held in two parts, with a break in between, with a total of 5 presentations that will focus on therapeutic apheresis, vascular access in aphaeretic techniques, neuro immunity and the role of the therapeutic apheresis, nursing approach in therapeutic apheresis and results of Therapeutic Apheresis Unit of Vithas Xanit", added Dr Franquelo.
